Hairstyles have represented affiliation to a tribal confederation, ethnic group, or a particular polity in parts of East Asia. Rulers demanding submission of peoples have always enforced uniformity in hairstyles and North Korean dictators are only the latest rulers in a long list to enforce such a uniformity.
